Freud’s iconic couch is still covered by an intricately patterned Qashqa’i rug, and it chimes with a long-felt love of oriental rugs by French artist Anne Deguelle. Her exhibition at the Freud Museum includes over 20 rugs, and explores the hidden links between dream worlds and decorative woven language. She studies the richness and significance of the patterns found in hand-woven carpets throughout the history of art, seeing how tribal rugs in particular represent territories, archeology, and collective memories.
